Running through Gardens

他者の公園や庭園での思い出と写真を集めて新しい記憶をつくり、栗林公園の中に持ち込む。さまざまな記憶が合わさり抽象化することで、別の場所の記憶が栗林公園の記憶とも混ざっていく。

記憶とは写真のようである。過去の物事を思い出すということはフォーカスを合わせる行為と似ている。

私たちは異なるプロセスと表現方法で、集めた他者の思い出のフォーカスをずらしていくことを試みる。

大橋鉄郎は、写真を元に立体作品を制作する。記憶の担保となっている思い出の写真は平面的で、記憶として残るイメージは自ずと平面的になる。その平面化したオブジェを写真を元にそのまま立体物へと戻す。記憶が写真へと置き換わる時、オブジェの裏側にはフォーカスが合うことはない。彼はこのようにオブジェの失われた記憶にフォーカスする。

アガサ・レイユは記憶の写真の中へ介入し、その記憶の中を探っていく。そして他者の記憶のイメージに自身の記憶のイメージを重ね合わせ、別の新しい物語を作り出す。彼女によって描きかえられた記憶は、彼女の記憶でも誰か他の人のものでもなくなる。この淡いぼんやりとしたイメージは、栗林公園と重なることで、また新しい記憶へと置き換えられていく。

We collect other people’s memories and photographs of parks and gardens, create new memories, and bring them into Ritsurin Garden. As various memories combine and become abstract, memories of other places mix with memories of Ritsurin Garden.

Memory is like a photograph. Recalling past events resembles the act of focusing. Through different processes and modes of expression, we attempt to shift the focus of the memories we have collected from others.

Tetsuro Ohashi makes three-dimensional works based on photographs. The photographs that serve as a guarantee of memory are flat, so the images that remain as memory naturally become flat. He turns these flattened objects back into three-dimensional objects based on the photographs. When memory is replaced by a photograph, the back of an object never comes into focus. In this way, he focuses on the lost memories of objects.

Agathe Raile intervenes in photographs of memories and explores within them. She overlays images of her own memories onto images of others’ memories, creating new stories. The memories she redraws belong neither to her nor to anyone else. These pale, hazy images, overlapping with Ritsurin Garden, are replaced once again by new memories.
