Arm of a miner statue (paper, inkjet print, tape, and glue), baseball bat broken from heavy use by a school baseball team, concrete, expanded polystyrene, kintsugi, and others

This work was made on the theme of ideology. The paper arm is based on a 3D scan of the arm of a miner statue that once stood at a coal mine in Ashibetsu during the war. During the war, similar statues were erected across Japan to promote increased coal production, but because metal was unavailable at the time, they were made of steel frames and concrete and were fragile; the Ashibetsu statue was eventually demolished due to weathering. The bat connected to the arm through the steel frame was actually used by a school baseball team until it broke. Grime from players’ hands remains around the grip.

Recent research has revealed that when the Ashibetsu miner statue was first erected, its pedestal bore the words “Tokon” (fighting spirit). Even today, “Tokon” is displayed in sports to boost morale.
