This work takes as its subject the “Miner Statue” that remains at the former Ashibetsu coal mine. The statue was made during the Pacific War to strengthen the munitions industry and raise morale. Because of material shortages at the time, it was made of concrete with iron wire as its core, and it had deteriorated so badly that it was difficult to preserve; in 1997, after the mine closed, it was rebuilt by local former coal miners and others.
Artists are sometimes compared to “canaries in the coal mine.” Today, however, most coal mines have closed. Time has separated us from them, and their image as a symbol has faded.
The statue made in wartime to raise morale and increase coal production, and the statue rebuilt with new hopes as a symbol of coal miners, carry different meanings, yet they stand on the same historical timeline.
